LIPSPEAKING
Lipspeaking (or oral transliteration) is a communication service for deaf and hard of hearing people who communicate through lipreading and speech.
A lipspeaker is a hearing person who has been professionally trained to be easy to lipread. The lipspeaker will silently relay the spoken message to the lipreader, reproducing the shape, flow, rhythm and stress of the speaker.
Lipspeakers will also use facial express and natural gesture to support the message and, where requested, fingerspelling or Sign Supported English.
Lipspeakers work in a variety of business, medical and legal* settings, and are invaluable at:
- events with multiple or unfamilar speakers
- training or conference workshops/breakout sessions
- guided tours
- workplace orientation courses
* For legal settings, a level 3 lipspeaker is required.
